I used to think that all Singaporeans are simply not ‘kind-hearted’ by nature. However, one incident that happened at the supermarket has forced me to change my thinking about all Singaporeans not being kind-hearted. It all happened on a Saturday like this…
It was a bright and sunny Saturday morning, I did my morning routine and proceeded to eat my breakfast. I noticed that the amount of cereal left in the packet was only enough for one more bowl. I then went on to finish the packet of cereal. After which, I decided to go to the nearby supermarket to get a new pack. I told my parents that I would be going to the supermarket, at the same time, my mother gave me a relatively long shopping list and told me to help her get those items on the list. She gave me some money and I went off. On my way out, I stuffed the shopping list into my pocket and started counting the money. In a strange way, I felt rather happy as I was carrying a lot of money(about 2 weeks of my allowance) and started playing with it. While I was playing, I did not realise that a note-worth $50 had slipped out of my hand. I then proceeded to get the items and make payment. To my horror, when I was paying the cashier, I noticed that I was short of money, I did not want to rush back home to break the news to my parents and so I stayed at the shop, searching high and low for the money but to no avail.
At that moment, the lady that was queuing behind me asked me how much was I short of. Just then, I had a feeling that she was going to give me some money, so, I told her that it was okay and she need not help me. However, she still insisted that I take the money to make the payment. I had no choice but to accept unwillingly. I told her that I was short of $50 and she helped me make the payment. I thanked her profusely and that if I ever had the chance to meet her again in the future, I would return her the $50, but she just shook her head and said that people should help one another without expecting anything in return. After that, I walked back home, thinking to myself about what the lady had taught me.
